Itchy Skin Problems
I was recently asked to help with a very itchy dog. I got straight to the task and concocted a potion that would befit any furry friend. Of course, we do have to keep in mind that not everything we put on our skin would be suitable for our fur babies, and with this in mind I used the ingredients I know to be safe. I made up a bath solution using colloidal oats with a hint of lavender oil (less is more with essential oils), which would give the initial calming to the itchy skin. Soak your fur baby for around 10 minutes, gently massaging the oats into the skin (keeping away from face at all times). Once the bath is done, dry off with a clean towel and massage a pre-made mix of shea butter, lavender oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil and vitamin E (quantities listed). The bath should only be given one or twice a week at most, until the condition improves. The oil mixture can be used as and when required. Always take advice from your vet should a problem persist and never ever use anything on your fur baby that may be harmful or you are unsure of. The ingredients I used are known to be safe for animals.
For this recipe I used:
50g shea butter
15g coconut oil (refined)
20g grapeseed oil
6 drops vitamin E
An added bonus to this recipe is that if your dog licks their fur after the oils have been massaged in, it will not harm them in any way. You could even use the mixture on your own skin - amazing!!
